Cologne waters 4711
During the 18th century, 4711 fragrances gained great popularity. Then a Cologne merchant named Wilhelm Mülhens appeared on the scene, who made the following speculation: he bought the rights to the Farina name from a man of that name, who of course had no connection whatsoever with the original Italian manufacturer. But Muelhens didn't seem to mind, so he used the Farina name to promote his own perfume, which was produced by his small factory in Cologne on Klöckergasse. However, the plot continues and Muelhens sues. His grandson, Ferdinand Mülhens, also sues, and in the end loses the lawsuit against the Farina family and is banned from using the name. However, this does not result in tragedy. The Mülhens rename the company and the perfume itself 4711, the house number given to the Mülhens when Cologne was renumbered on the eve of the French Revolution.
